Book announcements and reading room updates

Vernice and Annie, two motherless daughters raised in Honeysuckle, Louisiana, have been best friends and neighbors since earliest childhood but are fated to live starkly different lives. Raised by a fierce aunt determined to give her a stable home in the wake of her mother’s death, Vernice leaves Honeysuckle at eighteen for Spelman College, where she joins a sisterhood of powerfully connected Black women and discovers a world of affluence, manners, aspiration, and inequality. Annie, abandoned by her mother as a child and fixated on the idea of finding her and filling the bottomless hole left by her absence, sets off on a journey that will take her into a world of peril and adversity, as well as love and adventure, culminating in a battle for her life. A novel about mothers and daughters, friendship and sisterhood, and the complexities of being a woman in the American South, Kin is an exuberant, emotionally rich, unforgettable work from one of the brightest and most irresistible voices in contemporary fiction.

How it works

One book. One room. A sharper conversation.

Passport Pages is designed to be easy to join and meaningful once you arrive. The point is connection, not performance.

We choose one book each month.

Every pick connects to travel, wellness, culture, identity, or Black life around the world.

You read at your own pace.

Read the whole thing, listen to the audiobook, skim with intention, or arrive ready to learn from the room.

We meet virtually.

Each session is a guided 60-minute conversation with prompts, member reflections, and occasional guests.

You leave with more than notes.

The discussion connects the book to where we travel, how we rest, and how we move through the world.

Why Travel Black has a book club

Travel Black is about more than where we go.

It is about how we move, how we care for ourselves, and how we stay connected to culture, community, and wellness wherever life takes us.

Passport Pages is our monthly reading room: a space for books, conversation, Black global life, and the ideas that shape how we travel, rest, gather, and live.

The Disappearers book cover

Queer identity, violence, and survival in 1980s–90s Jamaica

The Disappearers

By Marlon James

About the book

Set in 1988 Kingston, eight strangers—all gay—come together to rehearse a play. After a mob attack kills one man, the survivors face physical recovery and reckon with the violence, hatred, and rage the assault exposes. Their responses range from suppression to pursuit of retribution as the narrative examines queer life in Jamaica across the 1980s and 1990s.
